Available Learnership Opportunities
The following trades are available under this programme:
- Electrician: Training for a career in electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance.
- Fitter and Turner: Gain hands-on skills in fitting, assembling, and maintaining machines.
- Boilermaker: Learn the craft of creating, installing, and maintaining large steel structures.
- Plumber/Carpenter: Develop dual skills in both plumbing and carpentry.
Minimum Requirements
Interested applicants should meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications: A Grade 12 certificate with at least an N3 Qualification or NCV Level 4.
- Additional Advantage: An N4 Qualification is beneficial but not required.

RCL Foods Sugar Division is launching a comprehensive apprenticeship program that enables participants to grow in skills and confidence. Candidates who join should be prepared to work independently, showcasing their drive and determination to learn and succeed.
Programme Outline
Here’s a breakdown of the structure of the programme:
- Institutional Training
- Duration: 20 weeks
- Location: Industrial Training Centre (ITC) in Mount Edgecombe
- Focus: Candidates will begin with structured theoretical training to develop foundational knowledge in their chosen trade. This phase combines coursework, hands-on exercises, and safety training essential for working in industrial environments.
- Practical Exposure
- Duration: 29 weeks
- Training Focus: Trainees will gain practical experience in different sections of the factory. During the operational and off-crop periods, they will work alongside skilled mentors and industry experts, learning the nuances of factory operations and maintenance. This period will expose candidates to real-world challenges, from machinery maintenance to problem-solving on the job.
- Annual Phase Tests
- Phase Test: At the end of each training year, candidates will complete a Mini Trade Test (phase test). This is an assessment of the skills and knowledge acquired so far. Passing these annual tests is necessary to continue in the programme and demonstrates each candidate’s progress.
- Final Trade Test
- After completing all phases, candidates will take a Final Trade Test. Upon successful completion, they will earn a nationally recognized qualification, opening doors to numerous career opportunities in South Africa’s industrial and trade sectors.
